Four great cities embodied power in the vibrant
Islamicate civilization of the Middle East: Damashq (Damascus), Baghdad,
Al-Qahira (Cairo), and Qunstuntiniyya (Constantinople). Must all of
them be ruined before the Specter of History is satisfied? Or does it
also have its eye on Shiraz and Isfahan?
